What Is The Difference Between Daycare and Preschool?
June 6, 2022

Early on in our lives, we learn many things all at once. We must learn our roles within our families, we learn how to communicate, we learn our likes and dislikes, we start learning subject matter in school. Children’s brains are filled with a tremendous amount of information, and they soak it all up in no time at all. One thing that we do not always consider, however, is that children are also still learning emotions

What Does it Mean to Learn Emotions?

The phrase “learning emotions” may initially be confusing, as you cannot really teach a child how to feel. You can, however, teach a child how to put words to their emotions, so they know how to recognize and name them, as well as differentiate between similar feelings. This results in learning how to best describe what they are feeling at certain times, which leads to the beginning of regulating these emotions. Let’s take a closer look.

Emotional Recognition

Angry. Frustrated. Sad. Happy. Annoyed. There are a range of emotions that each and every one of us experiences in a typical day. While some may be similar, they are all unique, and it is essential to recognize them each as their own. This adds to the depth of the human experience.

Emotional Regulation

For children, it can be difficult to understand initially that emotions are temporary, and to recognize the differences between them all. When a child is sad, it may feel (to them) like they will be devastated forever. Teaching them how to name their early childhood emotions can also help them learn how to regulate them. This act forces children to take a moment and consciously think about what they are feeling, determine why they feel that way, and work towards figuring out solutions and next steps to get to how they would like to feel. These are skills that follow individuals all the way through adulthood.

Learning Emotions in Early Childhood Education

A key place to learn emotions is in early childhood education programs. Surrounded by helpful teachers and educators, children can learn how to recognize and regulate their emotions in a safe and encouraging environment. In addition to learning their school curriculum, they can grow more as an individual, becoming well-rounded and emotionally intelligent. When teachers already know how your child learns best, it becomes easier to know how to let them become their own person, exploring and learning emotions at their own pace.
