Along with everything else that children are learning in preschool, there are many ways to cultivate health and wellness in preschool as well! From healthy mindsets to healthy habits and healthy bodies, many important lessons are learned about how to take care of ourselves at a very early age. TLC Schools believes in supporting healthy preschoolers, because we believe that this is essential to reaping all of the benefits of preschool. Let’s take a look at some ways that we can cultivate health and wellness in preschool students together!
Healthy Mindsets
Even though children are small, they have big emotions. Learning to express these, as well as processing the world around them, can be overwhelming. Developing healthy mindsets is essential to their success and fulfillment in preschool and beyond. Here are a few ways that children can begin to mold their mindsets:
Meditation trains individuals to be more mindful of their thoughts and feelings. Taking the time to sit with their emotions helps them more accurately put a name to them and can aid with resolving conflicts both within themselves and with others.
Deep breathing often goes alongside meditation and allows children to take time to control their breaths, taking them deep and slow, which in turn calms their mind. This makes it easier to verbalize the emotions they are experiencing.
Healthy Habits
Studies have shown that habits are established very early on in life. These habits follow us through adolescence and adulthood. We believe in helping to mold healthy habits for all of our students, in order to set them up for success in the rest of their lives. Let’s take a look at some habits that can be beneficial:
When we are involved in overwhelming situations, it can be hard to determine what our next steps are. Separating yourself from the circumstances and taking a step back helps provide us with clarity so we can move forward with confidence. Creating this separation for yourself is a healthy habit that can be taught to preschoolers as well.
Hyperactivity is common in a society that is overstimulating. For those who deal with hyperactivity on a more intense level, it can be extremely difficult to maintain focus in various situations. Learning how to keep your hands busy and your mind attentive is a task that will be beneficial in classes, meetings, and more. Finding something to fidget with that is not a distraction to others, and that allows children to stay focused on the task at hand, is another healthy habit.
Healthy Bodies
Lastly, healthy bodies make learning much easier. This is likely what most people think of first when discussing health and wellness at any age. There are many ways to actively work towards healthy bodies in preschool, such as:
Choosing healthy snacks instead of only junk foods or treats is a great way to help kids learn about nutrition and the best ways to eat. Snacks like peanut butter and apples are high in protein and other nutrients and won’t cause a major sugar rush and crash.
Kids have lots of energy, and channeling this into exercise activities can be a great way to teach them the importance of staying active. Incorporating dance breaks and more into their daily routine is essential!
