What 3 Things Should Every Daycare Have?

Have you been searching for a daycare facility for your child?

Finding the right childcare provider makes all the difference in the world when it comes to the growth and development of your child while you are at work, school or otherwise engaged.

The time between birth and the age of 5 are crucial for development and a daycare shouldn’t just be a “babysitter” they should also provide enrichment and educational activities that give your child a chance to flourish and thrive.

So when looking for a daycare for your infant or toddler what are some of the most important things to look for? We’ve got you covered by discussing 3 of essentials a daycare should have for your child.

Enriching Curriculum

We stated above that a daycare service shouldn’t just watch your kids and let them play. As educators we know that this is a crucial time in your child’s academic development. It’s important to note that they shouldn’t only focus on academics but also building other life skills like manners, sharing, basic hygiene and other practices that are already being learned at home.

Now, any child under the age of 4 doesn’t understand sitting at a desk all day so of course play should be involved as well! Learning through play is a great way to start incorporating education into a child’s life.

For example, here at TLC Schools we create classroom curriculums based on each level of childcare. We know their little minds are constantly filled with curiosity and keeping their attention doesn’t last long so we’ve built a curriculum that is specially designed for learning and play!

Ask your potential provider what they do in terms of curriculum to show you that it’s not just a babysitting service.

Low Child To Teacher Ratio

As a parent you know that handling one child is sometimes overwhelming (joyful, but overwhelming). Now imagine if you sent your child to school where there was only 1 teacher and more than a dozen children!

What do you think would happen? Not much in the case of learning.

A high student to teacher ratio should also give you pause to question the safety of the classroom. With curious toddlers and young children running around the classroom, how can a teacher keep their eyes on them and know they are safe from harm?

In a previous article we went into further discussion about the importance of a low child to teacher ratio and why we make sure that our classroom is not overcrowded so as to allow children to thrive in a safe environment with the ability to have the teacher’s attention.

Priority On Safety

This goes without saying but we still believe that is an essential question to ask your daycare provider. What are the safety protocols?

Here are a few questions to ask:

  • Do they ensure that your child can’t get into anything dangerous or leave the classroom unnoticed?
  • How are their sign in and sign out procedures? Do they have a list of who can and cannot pick them up and do they check photo identification if they don’t know the person?
  • Do they practice drills for safety and weather?
  • Are teachers certified in basic safety practices like CPR and first aid?

Answers to these questions can make a difference in whether or not you send your child to that daycare.
