How To Choose The Right Summer Camp For Your Child

How To Choose The Right Summer Camp For Your Child

School’s out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean the learning has to end!

Yes, we know, the thought of anything educational over summer break can make a child’s head spin, but keeping a child engaged in their level of education throughout the summer break is beneficial to their continued learning and upcoming school year!

Summer camp is a great way to continue their education without making it feel too much like school.

Your child will be engaged in a social and learning environment that gets them out of the classroom and involved in experiences they might not otherwise have!

However, not all summer camps are the same and it’s important to choose the right summer camp for your children.

If you aren’t sure how to pick the right one, don’t worry! We’ve come up with a few helpful tips to help you choose the right summer camp!

Curriculum

Summer camps should provide more than just a daily babysitting service; they should provide enriched learning experiences

Check out the curriculum of the camp and see if it aligns with your child’s educational goals and interests.

Does the camp have a theme? What kind of activities do they do? Are there guest speakers?

Summer camp is meant to immerse your child in a world they would otherwise not have the opportunity to see inside the classroom; so make sure it’s both enjoyable and educational!

Field Trips

Does the camp offer field trips to the local educational and entertainment centers around the area? Field trips are the perfect combination of fun and learning! Traveling to the local museum, aquarium or zoo gives your child the opportunity to see and experience something new while having fun with their peers.

Field trips are an excellent chance for them to work on their listening and social skills as well!

Staff

Another important aspect is to check and see who is running the camp. Our Camp TLC program is run by certified teachers who are dedicated to providing fun, interesting and educational experiences for your children.

Low teacher-to-student ratio is also an important factor when choosing a summer camp. You want your child to enjoy the group experience but still have a chance to get individualized attention from their teacher/counselor! Too many children in a group can also lead to overstimulation, distraction, and loss of learning.

Ensure your child is getting the most out of their summer camp program by making sure it is run by experienced educators and professionals.

Safety

We want to keep our children as safe as possible, and when they are away from us, it can make us uneasy and weary of letting them go.

Confirm with your day camp program that there are staff members certified in first aid, CPR and administering medications like EPIPens.

Do they have policies and procedures in place for incidents and accidents? How about a rainy day plan when the weather is too bad to be outside?

Don’t forget to ask about drop-off and pick-up procedures as well!
